Chronic effect of a low dose Mancozeb (Dithiocarbamete, Fungicide) contaminated potato diet on biochemical, redox parameters and liver structure in male wistar rats

Abstract

Potatoes have been a dietary staple in the world for centuries, and one of the most input-intensive crops and is the heaviest user of chemical pesticides of all major food crops. Mancozeb is a manganese/zinc ethylene bis-dithiocarbamate fungicide that is widely used in agriculture to control a broad variety of fungal infections of both vegetables and ornamental plants. Objective of this work toevaluate the effets of Mancozeb at low dose on me-tabolic, redox and liver structure of male rat wistar. Male rats were fed containing a potato diet containing Mancozeb at low dose (Mancozeb at 5 mg/kg/day) for 3 months. Plasma biochemical parameters (glucose, triglycerid, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), markers oxidative stress (vitamin C, catalase, glutathion, Malondialdehyde and car-bonylprotein) and histology of tissue (liver) were determined. Results showed that Mancozeb induced a significant reduction in body weight, food intake and adverse alterations in biochemical parameters such as an increase in plasma glucose, triglycerid, ALT and AST levels. With concomitant pre-sence of oxidative stress,and the presence of an inflammatory infiltrate in the histology of the liver. This study shows that exposure to Mancozeb at low dose (Mancozeb at 5mg/kg/day) induces metabolic disorders and an imbalance in the oxidant / antioxidant balance, at the serum level and or-gans with the presence of inflammation lymphocytic hepatic.
